Blue Hydrangea and Orchid Bouquet

Dense blue hydrangea as a base, with pink garden roses, white phalaenopsis orchids, lime-green dianthus and small white chamomile scattered through it. Seen from above the bouquet reads almost like a painting — which is exactly how it is built, as a flat field of colour rather than a dome of separate stems.

Blue hydrangea is the difficult flower here. It dislikes heat more than almost anything else we work with, so in Thailand it is seasonal and never cheap — most shops in Pattaya simply don't keep it. When it is in, we build this bouquet; when it isn't, we will tell you honestly rather than substitute something blue.

The colour story is the other reason to choose it. Almost every bouquet in a flower shop is pink or red. Blue with pink and lime is calm rather than romantic, which makes this the right bouquet for a birthday, an anniversary, a thank-you, a new mother — or for someone who already has every shade of rose.

How to keep it

Hydrangea drinks through its petals as well as its stem, which is the trick most people don't know. Keep the vase full, and mist the blue heads with water once a day — in an air-conditioned room, twice. If a head goes limp, don't throw it away: cut 2 cm off the stem and lay the whole flower head in a basin of cool water for half an hour. It usually comes back completely.
