Lilies — How to Care for Lilies in a Vase

Lilies usually arrive with most of their buds still closed, and they open one after another over several days. Because of this, a lily bouquet often stays decorative longer than many other flowers — and the way you handle the opening blooms makes a real difference.

How to care for lilies:

1. Fill a clean vase with cool, clean water so that about 50% of the stem is in the water.
2. Add Chrysal according to the instructions, if it is included with your bouquet.
3. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water level.
4. Trim the stems with a sharp knife or garden shears at approximately a 45° angle.
5. Place the lilies in a cool location away from direct sunlight and air conditioning airflow.
6. Use a stable vase — lily stems are tall and the open flowers can make the bouquet top-heavy.
7. As each flower opens, gently remove the pollen-bearing tips from the centre of the bloom.
8. Remove faded flowers as the next buds open, so the bouquet keeps looking fresh.
9. Check the water level regularly. If the water becomes cloudy, replace it, clean the vase, and refresh the stem cuts.

What about lily pollen?

When a lily opens, the tips in the centre of the flower carry pollen that stains fabric, skin, and the petals themselves. Florists usually remove them as soon as the bloom opens — simply pinch them off with a tissue. This keeps the flower clean and helps it stay fresh for longer.

If pollen does land on fabric, do not rub it or use water. Lift the powder off carefully with sticky tape, then let the rest fade in daylight.

Important: Lilies are toxic to cats — both the pollen and the plant itself. If you have a cat at home, place the bouquet somewhere it cannot reach, or choose a different flower.
