Gladiolus — How to Care for Gladiolus in a Vase
Gladiolus flowers gradually open from the bottom of the stem upward, so proper care can help the arrangement maintain its decorative appearance for longer.
How to care for gladiolus:
- Use a tall, clean vase that provides good support for the long stems.
- Fill the vase with cool, clean water so that about 30% of the stem is in the water.
- Remove leaves that will be below the water level.
- Trim the stems with a sharp knife or garden shears at approximately a 45° angle.
- Add Chrysal or another suitable flower food according to the instructions.
- Place the gladiolus in a cool location away from direct sunlight.
- As the flowers open, remove spent lower blooms.
- Check the water level regularly and add fresh water as needed.
- If the water becomes cloudy, replace it completely and refresh the stem cuts.
Tip: Florists often pinch off the top two or three unopened buds when placing gladiolus in a vase. This helps the remaining buds along the spike open more fully. Gladiolus should also be kept upright rather than stored lying down, as the tips tend to curve upward.
