Hydrangeas — How to Care for Hydrangeas in a Vase
Hydrangeas are one of the most water-loving cut flowers. Their large flower heads lose a lot of moisture, so it is especially important to monitor the water level and prevent the stems from drying out.
How to care for hydrangeas:
- Prepare a clean vase and fill it with cool, clean water so that about 90% of the stem is in the water — almost up to the flower head.

- Trim the stems with a sharp knife or garden shears at approximately a 45° angle.
- For thick hydrangea stems, you can make a small vertical split at the bottom of the stem to increase the surface area in contact with water.
- Place the bouquet in a cool location, away from direct sunlight, air conditioning airflow, and other sources of heat.
- If your hydrangea starts to look less firm, you can lightly mist the flower head with water. Hydrangeas can absorb moisture not only through their stems, so additional hydration may help restore their fresh appearance.
- Check the water level every day. Hydrangeas can drink a lot of water, especially during the first few days.
- If the water becomes cloudy or develops an unpleasant smell, replace it completely, wash the vase, and refresh the stem cuts.
Tip: Never leave a hydrangea without water, even for a short period. A dried-out stem can significantly shorten the flower's vase life.
